21 Types of Fabric

The fabric is the one thing that connects all fashion pieces. The material is the determining factor for the season and the comfort, be it a soft cotton T-shirt or a luxurious silk saree. Therefore, the Selection of fabric is most essential in any form of attire!

Let’s get to know about the top 21 types of fabrics –

Natural Fabrics

1. Cotton:

This is a breathable, soft, strong, and easy-to-wash fabric. But it gets wrinkled very quickly, shrinks, and takes a long time to dry! Cotton is great for plain shirts, daily wear, and easy-going clothes.

2. Linen:

It is naturally cool, it dries quickly, and it only becomes softer the more you wash it. Only one should be ready to have wrinkles because it requires lots of ironing. It is a master of summer dresses, heavyweight pants, and resort clothes.

3. Silk:

The seam of silk is soft, and the texture is soft to the touch, giving a delicate, light touch. It is costly, and normally needs to be dry-cleaned, and is easily weakened when wet. High-end blouses, scarves, and formal evening looks are best.

4. Wool:

Wool is a tremendously insulating fabric since it ensures that you are warm without much wrinkling. It is also super durable. The common ones include it being itchy, heavy, and needing to be washed delicately. It suits the winter coats, tailored suits, and sweaters!

5. Jute (Hessian):

It is cheap, tough, and biodegradable. Its disadvantages include that it is scratchy and non-stretchy, and stiff. Its primary applications are utilitarian, such as shopping bags, its rigid inner layer, and project making.

6. Hemp:

This is a strong and super eco-friendly fiber. It’s stiff at first, but softens after washing! You’ll see hemp in organic clothing, utilitarian items, and backpacks.

Synthetic & Manufactured Fabrics

7. Polyester:

This is a low-cost, strong, wrinkle-free, fast-drying, and shape-retaining fabric. The disadvantages are that it has low breathability and retention. Think sports apparel, linings, and uniforms.

8. Nylon:

Nylon is mega-strong, light, flexible, and resistant to damage. The disadvantages are that it is lowly ventilated and it also melts at high temperatures. It will be in the lifetime sportswear, swimwear, and jackets that last long.

9. Acrylic:

Acrylic is a lightweight, soft, warm, and cheap synthetic. It can be easily pill, is not very breathable, and is heat sensitive. Apply to low-end sweaters, knits, and cozy items.

10. Spandex (Lycra/Elastane):

Spandex is super stretchy, has good elasticity, and is lightweight. The negatives are lower breathability and cannot be bleached. It is needed in activewear, leggings, jeans, and compression garments.

11. Rayon (Viscose):

Rayon is an inexpensive fiber that looks and feels like silk. The large trade-offs include the fact that it is weak when wet, it shrinks, and wrinkles easily. It is a favorite among loose dresses, cheap tops, and linens.

12. Modal:

This is a step-up widely recognized to be very smooth (silk-like), anti-shrinkage, and drapes nicely. It is costlier than normal rayon and may even lose its original shape. The best in sleepwear, lingerie, and high-quality T-shirts.

13. Tencel (Lyocell).

Tencel (lyocell) has super high sustainability. It is very soft and has excellent moisture control. It is priced at a premium and may pill a little.  It is best recommended for premium t-shirt tops, soft casuals, or sustainable dresses.

14. Blends (e.g., Poly-Cotton):

This is the best combination of useful fabrics. Their performance varies based on the blend ratio. But combining fibers can reduce overall breathability! Blends are best for shirts, pants, and uniforms.

Texture & Weave Specific Fabrics

15. Denim:

It is characterized by its heavy twill fabric. Denim is very strong and wears out very easily. It is heavy cloth, very slow to dry, and the dye may bleed at first. Jeans, heavy jackets, and utility shirts are, of course, the most popular ones.

16. Jersey:

It is a soft and stretchy knitted fabric that is comfortable and usually does not need ironing, though it is very easy to snag, and cut edges will curl. The common knit top fabric, flowy dress, and t-shirt.

17. Flannel:

Flannel is insulating, warm, cozy, and absorbent. It is heavy, prone to pilling, and not quick to dry. Flannel can be used in nightwear, bathrobes, and shirts that would be used in cold climates.

18. Fleece:

It is a synthetic knit, which is quite cheap, very warm, light, and dries quickly, as well as being very easy to maintain. On the negative side, fleece is not windproof, poorly ventilated, and can stick to the body. Fleece is ideal for use in jackets of lighter weight, outerwear, and hoodies.

19. Corduroy:

Corduroy is special due to being ribbed and is very warm and tough. It is weight-heavy, may pick up dust on the ribs, and it forms a tendency to flatten. An excellent selection of durable pants, jackets, and skirts.

20. Twill:

The fabric is heavily diagonal, and it is resistant to wrinkles and hence can be made durable. It is heavy, and dirt is more visible compared to fabric with a flat weave. Best with heavy pants, shirt materials, and jackets.

21. Velvet:

It’s very soft, with a gorgeous fall. It is costly, difficult to wash, and very delicate to squash. It is normally used on formal attire, evening gowns, and ornamental trim.
